Haley's Heroes

There are many people living who are famous in the States
and many who are dead and gone, who rank among the greats.
But there's a group of officers who stand out in a crowd,
and we would like to cheer and clap and shout their praises loud;
They keep our children safe from harm, they break up dirty fights
or interrupt a burglary, then read the thief his rights.
They have a job to do that calls for bravery each day,
and most of us don't see the special moments on their way
that make them more than uniforms and badges shining bright
— the acts of strong compassion, that can warm the coldest night.
One day a Bearded Collie — HALEY — lost for many days,
was on the run through towns and woods and fields where sheep would graze.
A thousand people sent her light, when she began to roam,
— the light of great protection, that would lead her safely home.
An angel riding horseback spotted Haley in a field
and followed her for miles and more, until he had to yield.
He passed the information to the tired seraching fleet,
Who came alive when they saw Haley bounding down the street!
In hot pursuit and speeding, one saw flashing lights behind her;
instead of an arrest, the kind policeman said, "Let's find her!"
An ever-growing party followed, past each farm and ridge;
their hearts were in their throats as Haley crossed Fox River Bridge.
By then a dozen cars with flashing lights were on the case —
— with cellphones ringing, hearts of gold were keeping up the pace.
Till finally they circled her, with every breath suspended
and watched a tearful girl collapse on Haley — searching ended.
And that's why Haley and her friends — their siblings, moms and pops,
say BLESS THEIR HEARTS and THANKS to the FOX VALLEY METRO COPS!
