A Beardie Hero —
Mia Sedgwick
Mia grew up in Australia amidst animals — dogs and cats, of course, but also horses, cows, pigs and even an emu! She began showing dogs as a way to amuse herself while traveling to shows with a friend. After living overseas a few years, she returned to Australia and was introduced to Beardies by her sister, Averil. Her first Beardie was Willowbridge Min Freyia but her subsequent Beardies came from Oakcrest Kennels. Her last Beardie was an English import — AUS CH Highglade Lyric Dream.
Mia was never content to sit when she saw a job that needed to be done. In 1999 as she was reading the Internet Beardie list, BDL, she decided she wanted to do more for Neardies (shaggy dogs of no breed distinction). These dogs needed homes but were not eligible for breed rescue funds and services. So, with the help of a few of her "Internet friends," she began B.O.N.E. — Beardies and Othes Needing Emissaries. To date, the group has found forever homes for more than 200 Neardies and continues to be a strong rescue presence for shaggy dogs. Those dogs will be forever grateful to Mia for her foresight and dedication to their needs.
Mia was a special person who left for the Rainbow Bridge far too soon. Her legacy will be remembered and we are sure there were hundreds of doggy souls to greet her at the Bridge. B.O.N.E. has been a recipient of BOW Calendar funds since its inception, and is just another example of the international character of this effort.
